Huntington Beach Community Garden Officially Opens
Huntington Beach, CA – The Huntington Beach Community Garden (HBCG) celebrates its official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 pm on March 26, 2011. Located at 10134 Atlanta Avenue, Huntington Beach, the organic community garden features 112 plots. It is situated on two-and-one-half acres just east of Brookhurst, adjacent to the Santa Ana River.
The HBCG is a voluntary non-profit organization founded from a desire to create an organic, self-sufficient public garden for the citizens of Huntington Beach. This grassroots organization is made up gardening enthusiasts, business professionals, teachers, master gardeners and community organizers who share the common vision of promoting urban gardening and greening in Huntington Beach. The mission of the HBCG is to educate children and adults about organic gardening, and to provide an area where residents can grow fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs for their own use and for local food banks. HBCG has a 501(c)(3) non-profit status through affiliation with the California Garden Clubs, Inc.
After nearly two years of research and planning with the city and Southern California Edison, supported by the entire city council and staff and negotiated by City Councilman Devin Dwyer, the garden has become a reality. “We congratulate the Huntington Beach Community Garden,” said Dwyer. “This opening brings us one step closer to our vision of starting more community gardens throughout Huntington Beach.”
David Baronfeld, president of the HBCG Board of Directors, said, "This celebration is the culmination of a lot work by many people. It might take a village to raise a child. In this case, it took a community to plant a garden. We are not building a community garden but building a community of gardeners. We are grateful to so many individuals, organizations and businesses in the community who have helped us get to this day,” he added.
